Minimum entry qualifications for admissions through the Joint Matriculation Examination will be one of the following:
West African School Certificate, G.C.E. ('A' Level) or Senior Secondary School Certificate with credit in at least five subjects including English Language. Candidates for Science-oriented courses must have credit in Mathematics. Candidates for Engineering courses must have a credit in 'A' level Chemistry.
The acceptable qualifications for admission into first degree courses by direct entry include:
- A first degree from a university recognized by the Unilag Senate for this purpose.
- General Certificate of Education (or equivalent) with passes in five subjects including English Language of which not less than two have been passed at the Advanced Level.
- Candidates with the N.C.E. are normally considered for admission only in the Faculty of Education, Arts or Science provided that in addition to their two N.C.E. teaching subjects they have obtained credits/merits in three other subjects at the G.C.E. 'A' level or Teachers' Grade II Certificate. All candidates are expected to have credit/merit in English Language.

- Candidates for admission by Direct Entry to the Department of Geography must have a G.C.E. Advanced Level Pass in
Geography. A credit pass in 'A' level Mathematics is compulsory for all candidates. - Direct entry candidates for admission into the Faculty of Engineering must have H.S.C. or G.C.E. 'A' level passes in Physics, Mathematics (Pure and Applied) and 'A' level credit in Chemistry. Candidates who wish to study Chemical Engineering must have 'A' Level passes in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
- Candidates for the B.Sc. programme in Surveying must have H.S.C. or 'A' Level passes in Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Physics, or Physics, Mathematics (Pure and Applied). Credit will, however, be given to those who have 'A' Level or H.S.c. pass in Geography.
- Holders of the Higher National Diploma or its equivalent with an overall aggregate mark of at least 65% may be admitted directly into 200 level of the B.Sc. Engineering Course, subject to each case being considered on its merit.
- Candidates for admission to degree courses in Accounting. Business Administration, Finance (with special reference to Banking) and Economics are required to possess an '0' Level credit pass in Mathematics while those for Direct entry admission to the degree course in Actuarial Science and Insurance must possess a pass at the G.C.E. 'A' Level in Mathematics. Candidates for the degree course in Sociology who have at least. 'O' Level pass in Mathematics will be accorded preference. Candidates for the degree course in Psychology must obtain credit in Biology and Mathematics at the Ordinary Level.
- Direct Entry candidates for the degree programme in Computer Science must possess an Advanced Level pass in at least two of the following: Pure mathematics, Mathematics (Pure and Applied), Applied Mathematics and Physics. Experience of Computer Programming and System Analysis will be an advantage.
- In certain Faculties, applicants may be required to take a test before the final decision is taken.
- Candidates for admission by Direct Entry to the College of Medicine must have a pass in at least three science subjects, namely, Physics, Chemistry, Biology (or Zoology in place of Biology), at G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination. In addition, candidates must have passed English Language and Mathematics at the G.C.E. Ordinary Level.
- Candidates for the Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Pharmacology or Pharmacy must have 'A' Level pass in Chemistry, Biology or Biological Science, Physics or Mathematics.
